OXFORD, Miss. — Harish Chander, a Doctoral Candidate in Health & Kinesiology with an emphasis in Biomechanics and Neuromechanics at the University of Mississippi, has been named the School of Applied Sciences Student of the Month for October 2013.

With a background as a licensed physical therapist in India, Mr. Chander's interest now encompasses research into human balance and gait analyses, especially with applications in the field of Ergonomics and Occupational Biomechanics. The ultimate goal is to prevent falls and fall-related injuries in different occupational environments.

Mr. Chander teaches core undergraduate courses such as Kinesiology, Motor Control and Learning, and Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries. He also staffs the Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology Laboratories in the Department of Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation Administration.

201309-SOM-PortraitOXFORD, Miss. —Akellea Swingrum, a University of Mississippi undergraduate in Social Work, has been named the School of Applied Sciences Student of the Month for September 2013.

Ms. Swingrum, a senior, also has a minor in Legal Studies. She is a peer tutor and mentor at The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and a student archival assistant at the Modern Political Library. She is a member of Gamma Beta Phi and Phi Theta Kappa. She holds an Associates of Arts in Social Work from Northwest Mississippi Community College (2012).

After graduation, Ms. Swingrum plans to be a Juvenile Court Counselor or a Hospice Case Manager.

Brooke Alexander Fratesi :

OXFORD, Miss. Brooke Fratesi, a University of Mississippi undergraduate student in Communication Sciences and Disorders, has been named the School of Applied Sciences Student of the Month for February 2013.

Ms. Fratesi is a University of Mississippi Varsity Cheerleader, a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, a University of Mississippi National Cheer Competition Team Member, Gamma Beta Phi Honors Society Member, and a member of the Tri Delta Sorority. In the past, she has been a counselor at Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp for Children and Adults with Significant Disabilities.

OXFORD, Miss. Katherine Russell, a University of Mississippi undergraduate student in Communication Sciences and Disorders, has been named the School of Applied Sciences Student of the Month for March 2013.

Ms. Russell is a Kappa Kappa Gamma, and works extensively in a management capacity for volunteer and charitable organizations. She is interestered in pursuing a Masters degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Mississippi.

Vinayak K. Nahar, M.D. :

OXFORD, Miss. Vinayak "Vinny" Nahar, a University of Mississippi graduate student in the Department of Health, Exercise Science, & Recreation Management, has been named the School of Applied Sciences Student of the Month for April 2013.

Dr. Nahar defended his M.S. in Health Promotion in April 2013, and anticipates completing his Ph.D. in Health Behavior and Promotion in 2014, also with HESRM. Dr. Nahar also holds a Doctor of Medicine from Vitebsk State Medical University in the Republic of Belarus.

Dr. Nahar is the 2011 recipient of the H. Leon Garrett Achievement Award in Health Promotion, and also the recipient of First Prize in the University of Mississippi 2013 Graduate Student Council Poster Presentation.
