Lunch & Learn Event To Focus on Local and Sustainable Foods

Posted on April 3rd, 2015 by staff

OXFORD, Miss—On Monday, April 13th, the University of Mississippi’s Nutrition Clinic is hosting a Lunch and Learn event at Lenoir Hall. The topic of the event will be local and sustainable foods.

According to data provided by United States Department of Agriculture, local foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables are beneficial to both economical development and health. A local food system also provides food security (all people at all times have access to food for a healthy life). These are just a few of the topics that will be discussed at the Lunch and Learn event.

“The Lunch & Learns are a way for participants to learn healthy information on numerous topics while having a delicious healthy meal all within the normal workday,” said Janie Cole, dietitian at the UM Nutrition Clinic. “The information is provided by a registered dietitian and will hopefully help dispel myths and misinformation about nutrition. Each session will have time for questions with the RD at the end. Any restaurants are welcome to participate in providing the meals.  We are hoping that local businesses will use this clinical service as part of their staff development for health and wellness programs.”

Food will be provided by Oxford restaurant RAViNe.

Only 15 spots are available for the Lunch and Learn. The cost is $20 per person and can be paid through payroll deduction, MC, Visa, or cash.
