Department Offerings

Communication Sciences and Disorders

  • ASL 101: American Sign Language
    • You can add this to your schedule without instructor approval!  Remember that ASL will satisfy the modern language requirement.  If you plan to take ASL for your modern language requirement, you can take ASL 101 during WI, ASL 102 during May Intersession, ASL 201 during August Intersession and ASL 202 WI 2019-20.

Health, Exercise Science, and Recreation Management

  • ES 100: Intro to Exercise Science
    • An introduction to the faculty and courses in exercise science, with an emphasis on career planning and student development. Required for all exercise science majors during the first semester of program enrollment and recommended for anyone considering exercise science as a major.
  • ES 391: Trends and Topics             
    • Topic for winter: The course will cover some controversial and currently researched topics in Exercise Science such as alcohol and exercise, Cross-Fit, training at altitude, genetics vs. exercise for health, and whether resistance training is good or bad for your health. The class will be very discussion based and will involve reading various research articles covering each of the topics.
  • ES 394: Therapeutic Exercise and Fitness
    • An examination of health disparities and outcomes experienced by persons with disabilities with special emphasis on how these disparities can be alleviated with physical activity and exercise. This course will cover pathology and origin of congenital and secondary disabilities from a biological perspective. Additionally, this course will provide an overview of the techniques and methods in exercise programming for persons with disabilities.
  • ES 402: Exercise Leadership
    • Exercise Leadership overviews the educational concepts, program design, and coaching/training leadership skills needed to teach and implement exercise programs for individuals whom are considered general population or apparently healthy.
  • ES 440: Behavioral Aspects of Exercise
    • Behavioral considerations related to establishing and maintaining personal, commercial, corporate, or clinical-based exercise programs. Emphasis on strategies for increasing adherence and reducing attrition.
  • HP 203: First Aid and CPR
    • Safety instruction and practices in the methods as prescribed in the American Red Cross standard and advanced courses.
  • HP 191: Personal and Community Health
    • A comprehensive health course, including principles and practices of healthful living for the individual and community; major health problems; responsibilities of home, school, health agencies.

Legal Studies

  • CJ 100: Introduction to Criminal Justice      
    • Philosophical and historical backgrounds, agencies, and processes of the criminal justice systems in the United States.
  • CJ 160: Law Enforcement Patrol Procedures
    • Comprehensive police officer survival seminar examining laws regarding use of force, civil and criminal liability, mental conditioning, post shooting trauma, dynamics of lethal force, and a range of special topics. Strenuous physical activity is included.
  • CJ 322: Criminal Justice Communications
    • A survey of major forms of communication in the field of criminal justice, including verbal and written.
  • CJ 390: Special Topics
    • Study of topics related to criminal justice but not addressed in other courses within the department. May be taken up to four times for credit as long as the topic focus is different each time.
  • CJ 460: The Correctional Experience
    • Broad correctional experience designed to provide the opportunity to visit correctional institutions, observe operations, and interact with correctional practitioners and confined offenders.

 Nutrition and Hospitality Management

  • NHM 211/213: Food Prep & Food Prep Lab – 4 Hrs
    • OPEN TO ALL MAJORS during Winter Intersession! Experience and learn the art and science of food preparation. This class includes both lecture and a foods lab to engage students in learning culinary principles and the science behind successful cooking. Learn about new food trends and how food plays an important role in our culture, social environment, and overall health.
  • NHM 323: Human Development Across the Lifespan – 3 Hrs
    • Life span of human development, including physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development; the needs of individuals throughout the life span; and the formation and maintenance of human relationships. Open to all majors!
  • NHM 311: Nutrition – 3 Hrs
    • Fundamental principles of human nutrition; application to needs of individuals and families at all stages of the life cycle. Open to all majors!
  • NHM 111: ServSafe – 1 Hr
    • A national food safety course developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, which grants certification in food safety to individuals who pass their normal exam. Open to all majors!
  • NHM 466: Human Resource Development in Services – 3 Hrs
    • Examination of human resource theories and techniques as they apply to service industries. Emphasis is placed on organizational culture, recruitment, selection, and training and development of human resources. (For BSDN or BSHM majors only – satisfies MGMT 383 requirement for both majors. Prerequisites include wither NHM 114 or 214 or 215, and GB 370 or MGMT 371 or MGMT 391.)

Social Work (Tupelo Campus ONLY)

  • SW 325: The Helping Professional in Health Settings
    • Course description: An elective course to study the dynamics of illness, death, and grief, the psychological aspects of patient care within the health care system, common health care practices and terminology, and the roles of social workers and other helping professionals within the health care system.
