School of Applied Sciences is recognized for their support for Ole Miss Army ROTC

OXFORD, Miss. – On September 16th, 2021 the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Mississippi was recognized for their support towards the Magnolia Battalion by Ole Miss Army ROTC.

While veteran students come in with all different backgrounds, the School of Applied Sciences was recognized for accommodating each student in any way possible. For instance, many ROTC students get commissioned in the spring, so Applied Sciences staff does everything to process their degree and transcript early.

“The Army ROTC program wanted to recognize the department as a whole for all the support it has given the Army ROTC program for the past few years,” said Myron McWashington, recruiting operations officer for Ole Miss Army ROTC.

“This award is just a small way of saying thank you for not just supporting the Ole Miss Army ROTC program but the United States Army as a whole.” said McWashington

Army ROTC is over 100 years old, and many students have received their degrees through the School of Applied Sciences, since its inception 20 years ago.

“The School of Applied Sciences is also helping us establish a relationship with the students from their programs in an effort to potentially provide more medical personnel to serve in the Medical Service Corps of the United States Army,” said Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Jackson, chair of the Department of Military Science and professor of military science.

Jackson said the School of Applied Sciences was an integral part of having their first nurse candidate in the Army ROTC program.

“Through their tireless and dedicated effort in helping one of our cadets establish a schedule that would allow them to finish both the nursing program and the Army ROTC program providing her with the opportunity to achieve her goal of becoming an Army nurse. Because of their work, we were able to get a seven-year nursing scholarship to assist her in financing her education with Army scholarship money,” said Jackson.

Applied Sciences staff members Vanessa Moore, Je’Lisa McGee and Kelley Jenkins were in attendance at the award ceremony.

“Anything that we can do to give back to our student veterans is very special to know that they are going to serve our country,” said Jenkins.
