May Intersession (May 13th-25th)

ES 391-Trends and Topics (3hrs)

The trends and topics class will be centered around discussing trendy and controversial topics within Exercise Science. We will read some popular press articles and see if the claims being made are actually supported by scientific research. We will discuss a new topic each class period, with a focus on developing critical thinking skills and keeping an open mind when acquiring new information. The specific topics will differ depending on what the class is interested in discussing, but some sample topics from previous classes include:

  • Is it better to exercise using free weights or machines?
  • Does alcohol actually improve exercise performance?
  • How quickly do you lose adaptations to exercise when you stop?
  • Is it really beneficial to consume protein after resistance exercise?
  • Are genetic tests beneficial at predicting how someone will respond to exercise?
  • Is cross-fit safe/effective?
  • Is resistance or aerobic exercise better for general health?
  • Is apple cider vinegar beneficial for weight loss?

HP 191-Personal and Community Health (3hrs)

A comprehensive health course, including principles and practices of healthful living for the individual and community; major health problems; responsibilities of home, school, health agencies.

HP 203-First Aid and CPR (3hrs)

Safety instruction and practices in the methods as prescribed in the American Red Cross standard and advanced courses.

NHM 111: SERVSAFE (1hr)

A national food safety course developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, which grants certification in food safety to individuals who pass their normal exam.

NHM 211/213: Principles of Food Preparation with Lab (4hrs)

Have fun learning about how foods interact with each other. You can win the “Iron Chef” contest at the end of the term! (Non-Majors need to request permission to add for intersessions!)
